In 1995, PUR scored a huge hit with their album "Abenteuerland." On the tour of the same name, the Swabians led by singer Hartmut Engler filled entire stadiums, and this much can be revealed: There weren't quite as many listeners on Saturday evening at the Flintstone in the Paläon in Schöningen, but with their "living room concert," the Braunschweig-based PUR cover band Abenteuerland came pretty close to the original in terms of atmosphere, according to die-hard PUR fans.
Anja Schliephake, for example, had only seen PUR live on stage on a cruise ship in September and had chatted with Engler in front of a fast food restaurant in Copenhagen. "Of course, Carsten Siebert's voice is different," admitted the Schöningen native, but she thought the cover band's performance was great and the atmosphere in the packed Flintstone was fantastic.
The women's handball team from Schöningen/Schöppenstedt, who had come to the concert to bond as a team, felt similarly, Marie-Luise Fiedler revealed with a wink. She herself prefers techno, "but at some point you just start humming along," she laughed. That's because of the German lyrics and catchy melodies, surmised teammate Sonja Höfler, who proved to be extremely accurate when it came to knowing the lyrics. "I think my handball girls and I have been to every PUR concert that took place in the surrounding area," she confessed, adding: "The cover band Abenteuerland is really great."
Anja and Uwe Urban, as well as Mona Völker from Süpplingen, who had already seen "Abenteuerland" on stage in Wolfenbüttel, agreed. "When I heard that they were giving a concert at the Paläon, I knew I had to be there. And what can I say: I'm absolutely thrilled," beamed Anja Urban. Sure, as a cover band of a cult German-language band like PUR, it might seem a little easier at first glance. The audience knows the lyrics by heart, and hit songs like "Lena," "Abenteuerland," and "Funkelperlenaugen" really do make the listeners' eyes sparkle like stars. On the other hand, the cover always has to measure up to the original. And with a band like PUR, the bar is set pretty high. It's good that Abenteuerland has retained its authenticity and made a name for itself as a cover band over the years."
