Tommy Who! – A Tribute to The Who

A PIECE OF MUSIC HISTORY

With their performance at the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969, The Who helped write a significant chapter in music history. A few weeks before that performance, however, they had already written a chapter all their own in the history of rock with the release of the concept album *Tommy*—and, at the same time, one of the first and most significant rock operas ever.

Almost all of the songs were composed by guitarist Pete Townshend, who had come up with the idea for the concept album three years earlier. Townshend was also inspired by the teachings of the Indian mystic and guru Meher Baba when developing the story. The album’s success was followed by a 1975 film adaptation featuring Tina Turner and Elton John in guest roles, as well as adaptations as a musical and a ballet.

To mark the album’s 20th anniversary, The Who embarked on a spectacular tour in 1989, during which the band was supported by drummer Simon Philipps and John Douglas “Rabbit” Bundrick on keyboards, among others. One evening during that tour has gone down in legend, when such illustrious guests as Elton John, Phil Collins, Steve Winwood, Patti LaBelle, and Billy Idol joined them on stage.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the album*Tommy*, the Munich-based tribute bandTOMMY WHO!wasformedin 2019. Together with prominent guests from the Munich music scene, they will bring the album to the stage in May 2020 in a nearly exact recreation of The Who’s 1989 tour version.

ACTUALLY, the musicians in Tommy Who! come from punk, progressive rock, blues rock, Austro-pop, and classic hard rock… none of them really had The Who on their radar… some of them didn’t want to cover other bands anymore, but just play their own music. BUT THEN … Georg showed them the video from The Who’s ’89 tour.
