With their performance at the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969, The Who wrote an important piece of music history. A few weeks before this performance, however, they had already made their own mark on rock history with the release of the concept album Tommy—one of the first and most significant rock operas ever.
Almost all of the songs were composed by guitarist Pete Townshend, who had come up with the idea for the concept album three years earlier. Townshend was also inspired by the teachings of Indian mystic and guru Meher Baba when writing the story. The album's success was followed by a film adaptation in 1975 starring Tina Turner and Elton John in guest roles, as well as musical and ballet productions.
To mark the album's 20th anniversary, The Who embarked on a spectacular tour in 1989, during which the band was supported by drummer Simon Philipps and John Douglas "Rabbit" Bundrick on keyboards, among others. One evening during this tour became legendary when illustrious guests such as Elton John, Phil Collins, Steve Winwood, Patti LaBelle, and Billy Idol joined them on stage.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the albumTommy, the Munich tribute bandTOMMY WHO!wasformedin 2019. Together with prominent guests from the Munich scene, they will perform the work almost note for note in May 2020, based on the version from The Who's 1989 tour.
ACTUALLY, the musicians from Tommy Who! come from punk, progressive rock, blues rock, Austro pop, and classic hard rock... none of them really knew The Who... some of them didn't want to cover other bands anymore, but only wanted to play their own music. BUT THEN... Georg showed them the video of The Who's '89 tour.
After that, everything happened very quickly!
