From Yellow to Orphans, from The Scientist to Higher Power:
The Coldplay tribute band Shiver covers the entire spectrum of the British cult band, which has reinvented itself again and again in 25 years of band history, yet has remained true to itself. Shiver brings the Coldplay phenomenon to the stage in all its dimensions – rousing, touching, inspiring.
Shiver’s focus is on transporting the songs, touching and moving people with the depth and lightness of the music. The corresponding feeling should spill over the edge of the stage and flood the audience: Sadness, longing, hope, but also energy and love.
Sven Ruppert (vocals, guitar, piano), Luca Gehring (drums), Dan Brian Broszeit (bass) and Chris Peter (guitar) are inspired by the rich diversity of the original. 25 years of very diverse songwriting, from ballads to rock songs, from electro to dance numbers: Shiver’s two-hour concert offers a little bit of everything. Songs from every Coldplay album can be found on the setlist. The band also attaches great importance to taking die-hard fans from the very beginning with them. The depth and intensity, the emotionally moving nature of the first three albums (Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head and X & Y) is particularly present.
Every eye contact, every exchange between the audience and the band, every sing-along and dance makes the audience part of the show and regularly gives the band members goosebumps. At the latest during Viva la vida, singer Sven Ruppert leaves the stage and continues to sing in the midst of the crowd, together with them, immersing himself in the atmosphere. It’s a special moment every time: “When I look into people’s eyes and they’re all beaming. That’s the most direct feedback you can get as a musician.”
This exchange goes beyond the last song: “For us, the concert isn’t over because the music stops. It’s a whole evening,” says Sven Ruppert. After their performance, the musicians are drawn to the stage and look forward to every conversation. Bassist Dan Broszeit: “We’re really curious about the people. Who are you? Where are you from? How did you like the concert?” Autographs, photos, sometimes even a signed stick from the drummer – it’s all part of the Shiver experience.
The Coldplay tribute band Shiver are Sven Ruppert (vocals and guitar), Dan Brian Broszeit (bass), Chris Peter (guitar) and Luca Gehring (drums), who live in very different parts of Germany. They share a long-standing friendship and a love of Coldplay, whose music has touched each of them in their own way, accompanied them and never let go.
During the 2020 pandemic, the idea was born to form a Coldplay tribute band and develop a program for large stages that would cover Coldplay’s entire range. The first ideas were exchanged via voice messages, and the first concerts took place under coronavirus safety conditions – with minimum distancing and limited attendance.
Shiver now thrills thousands of spectators in front of the stage, has a growing fan base and just the right feel for setlists that convey the Coldplay cosmos. Open-air concerts throughout Germany and other European countries are followed every year by a club tour in the fall and winter.
This is what singer Sven Ruppert says about Coldplay: “Coldplay has it all. The whole spectrum, the whole range of emotions. I listened to the first album Parachutes on the way back from a flat-sharing party and it touched me immediately. It had such depth. It didn’t let go of me and I still can’t let go of it. His favorite Coldplay song: Amsterdam in the live version. The guitar. Super intense. There are some insanely great moments. It’s an incredible song. We haven’t dared to try Shiver yet.
One of the greatest fan moments: When you see people again, that’s a gift as a musician, more awesome than any fee. People come for you. They know they’re going to have a great evening and some of them travel from far away. How cool! That’s the best part of the job.
About Shiver: The chemistry between us makes Shiver special for me. It’s a friendship that has grown deep. We are authentic. You can rely on everyone incredibly well. Not everything is just colorful and happy with us. The old songs in particular are not so smooth, they create friction before they dissolve. Goosebumps! We want to take people with us.
This is what guitarist Chris Peter says about Coldplay: “Coldplay is very exciting because they have reinvented themselves again and again over the years and at the same time have always remained true to themselves. You can tell immediately that they’ve dared to do something new, but it’s still Coldplay. Not many can do that. Coldplay is very versatile. It’s fun to present their entire portfolio on stage, from rock to ballads to EDM.
On his favorite Coldplay songs: Coldplay has quite a few beautiful songs. Everglow is a beautiful, calm, soft number that shows a completely different character to the other songs. Mitnight shows that Coldplay is not only mainstream, but also covers other genres. Yellow is just super cool to play.
On his favorite fan moment: I think it’s great when people come up to us afterwards and say that they noticed we had fun playing. That’s a great compliment! Sometimes they say they didn’t get any more tickets for Coldplay. “But you were a good substitute.” I think it’s great that we were chosen as a replacement for the original.
About Shiver: What makes us special is the personal level. It’s like family. When we get together, we always have a great time together. We take a very detailed approach to the setlist, think about the arc of suspense, the choice of songs. That’s what makes us special.
What drummer Luca Gehring says About Coldplay: I think it’s crazy how many songs Coldplay has. When we started at Shiver, we played songs that I knew but didn’t realize were by Coldplay. I find the whole show extremely impressive. It doesn’t get much bigger and more blatant than that. Coldplay cover so much of what a modern live band needs today. And their style has changed over the years. I really like that.
His favorite Coldplay songs: “The Scientist” is one of the most beautiful Coldplay songs. Sven sings it incredibly well. It’s a song that is timeless. It will probably still work for the next 50 years. Higher Power has a lot of energy, it makes people dance, it creates a good atmosphere. I love playing Yellow because we perform it really well live as a band.
On his greatest fan moments: I always think it’s cool when people come up to us after the gig and say something. In Suhl, for example, I stood there with the guys for 40 minutes, we took pictures and signed autographs. When people want to have a stick signed as a souvenir, I feel honored.
About Shiver: For me, it’s super important that the band and the whole team work well together off stage. We spend a lot of time together in the car and in the hotel and it just meshes really well between everyone. My favorite moments are five minutes before the show, just before we go on stage, and the time in the hotel when we chat about the gig, what went well, what we could do differently or better. On stage, I absolutely love it when the audience really gets into it. When you realize that people are really into it, it gives us a real energy boost.
This is what bassist Dan Brian Broszeit says About Coldplay: “In my place” came out when I was 16. There’s something really vulnerable about the lyrics, something about being lost in life and the uncertainty of what will happen. The honesty and authenticity really touched me. “In my place” describes Coldplay quite well. In combination with the music, it is more than just what you can extract from the lyrics. It stayed with me after the first listen and still does today.
To his favorite Coldplay song: Besides “In my place”, I particularly like the song “Talk”. The way we arranged the intro has a really distinctive mood. There’s a really cool energy that builds and builds. When Chris plays his lead, the bass plays with the notes, Luca does such a cool build-up and Sven says a few words to the audience. The way he does it is mega-emotional, it’s honest and vulnerable again. That dissolves in the outro. I can always lose myself completely in this moment.
About Shiver: When Sven told me about the idea of a Coldplay tribute band, it sounded like a ticket to another world. With a crew, light man, sound man, big stage. It’s just doing it that grabs me. When I met the people who are now the Shiver family, I was simply thrilled by their openness. What makes the band special for me are the people behind it. That’s the Shiver family.
Special fan moments: I really like it when people come and chat after the concerts. There was this moment in Erlenbach. This bass player, who certainly knows a lot more about the whole thing than I do, takes quite a bit of time. 20 minutes at the end of a long evening. He comes up to me, tells me what music he likes, what bass he thinks is great, shares his enthusiasm and wants to know what I think. People come up and talk. They share something personal about themselves with me and I see that as a gift.
